Izmir earthquake: People waiting for their loved ones among the collapsed buildings in Turkey

A strong earthquake shook the Aegean coast of Turkey and the northern Greek island of Samos on Friday, knocking down several buildings, killing at least 22 people and injuring hundreds.

Many pictures of the western Turkish province of Izmir are circulating in the media. The epicenter was reported below the ground, however; no tsunami alert was issued.



Rescue workers are digging the rubble in the hope of saving as many lives as possible.


The US Geological Survey put the quake's magnitude at 7.0 on the Richter scale, but Turkish officials put the magnitude at 6.6.

People around the world have expressed sympathy with the Turkish people over the loss of life and property caused by the earthquake.

Sitting in a cafe, they are waiting for rescue officials to provide them with information about their loved ones.

Some people are standing between the collapsed buildings waiting for their close friends and relatives.

According to reports, 20 people have been killed and 786 injured in Izmir province so far.

Some people had to spend the night in tents after their homes were destroyed. Due to the extreme cold in the area, people have gathered around the fire.

Debris is being removed with the help of a crane after the quake. A wrecked car can also be seen in the wreckage.

The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, however; no tsunami alert was issued.
