Leon shooting The pastor was attacked because of an affair

Police cordoned off parts of the city after Saturday's attack

According to French prosecutors, a suspect confessed to firing on a Greek Orthodox pastor in Lyon last week because of his personal obstinacy.

The 40-year-old accused told the prosecution that the pastor was having an affair with his wife.

Fifty-two-year-old pastor Nicholas Kakavilax was shot and wounded outside his church on October 31. He spoke to the police after coming out of a coma on Wednesday.

The shooting came days after three people were killed in a knife attack on a church in the southern French city of Nice.

It was initially feared that the operation was similar to the one in Nice, which French President Emmanuel Macron called an "Islamist terrorist attack."

The motive for the first shooting in Lyon was unclear, and authorities initially investigated an attempted assassination attempt in the case.

But the investigation progressed when the pastor regained consciousness and was able to speak.

The suspect, a Georgian citizen, was arrested at his home in Lyon on Friday, according to a report in the French newspaper Le Prezi.

The newspaper quoted a statement from Lyon's public prosecutor, Nicholas Jacket, as saying that the suspect was "the husband of a woman who was having an affair with the victim."

The newspaper further reported that the accused told the prosecution that his intention was not to kill the priest who was having a romance with his Russian wife.

The pastor, who is recovering from his operation, announced his resignation from the church a month ago.
